CHAPTER.6/ POSTCARDS FROM BARCELONA

WITH JerichO Delayah

My PURPOSE is to create imagery that is mY OWN. THEREFORE, I wANT my work to be perceived as primitive, basic art THAT EXPLAINS AN IDEA WITHOUT COMPLEXITY.

Have an idea = reproduce it in art; without complications or ornaments.

GLOBAL, MEGA BRANDS HE WANTS TO WORK WITH

Marvel or Nike would be dream clients i’d like to work with…

Although I have others, these brands have both been very influential in my life. I was first inspired by Marvel Comics and the art of their beginnings. As a reader from childhood, I have been influenced by it for years.

Beyond what NIKE symbolizes as a company to most, I have been drawn to the logo symbolism and the back story of the word itself. The goddess, Niké Áptera, and how the swoosh logo was drawn by one of the wings of the famous sculpture… it inspires me to create and causes creative ideas to surge through my veins.

LET’S START FROM THE BEGINNING
Jericho Delayah hails from the city of medieval architecture, Barcelona. His brandwork, murals, & illustration all have one singular focus- to get the concept across. With skillful simplicity, Delayah © ‘writes on the wall,’ telling stories of our modern-day infatuations in the styles of Egyptian hieroglyphics & multi-plane-Picasso.

IMPORTANT PHRASE/ SAYING THAT BRINGS INSPIRATION

上がれ心臓の音 / Agare shinzō
no oto”

(Get louder, heartbeat!)

This saying is meaningful to me as the brain creates, but our heart is the source that breathes life into our art.

DELAYAH ON HOW IT FEELS FOR WORK TO BE THE ‘FACE’ OF BRANDS
It feels amazing for my work to be the face of brands like Hybrid Coffee and the music projects of Andy Mineo. It is also rewarding to see that my singular, signature illustration style can be adapted to fit different brands and seamlessly connect to totally different types of proposals, such as the career of an international musician or an NYC coffee shop.

That's why I love my job. I shape concepts and feel the support and confidence of the creatives commissioning my work as I visualize their product or mission. It is something very beautiful and what I most like about being an artist.

On Picasso/Hieroglyphic inspiration in works

Both represent me well as they are flat, primitive art forms focused on capturing an idea/concept .

I think Egyptian art and multi-perspective, Picasso-esque styles represent me very well. Both are flat and primitive art forms focused on capturing an idea/ concept without being too complex.

PEER PERSPECTIVES

DELAYAH© ON CONFIDENCE FOR THE JOURNEY AND HUMILITY TOWARDS OTHERS

I think it is important to believe in yourself and “want to conquer the world” but always with humility and respect for others.

BEST ADVICE ON MY CAREER & WORK WAS FROM A FRIEND:

“Never doubt yourself, on this journey you will be forced to be very proud and have a very big ego and that's okay, trust your art, but never lose your humility.”

The peer that helped, inspired, & pushed me most through the journey is without a doubt, my travel companion and girlfriend. She always inspires me and motivates me to continue.

She doesn't let me settle and encourages me to be in constant movement. She is fundamental in my art.
